A painter and luthier, his meticulously crafted guitars have become legendary for their tonal qualities and their use by renowned artists (the Presti-Lagoya duo, Julian Bream, the Pomponio-Zarate duo). The headstock shape, rosette design, and purfling, combined with a harmonious overall design, laid the foundations for a French lutherie style characterized by its understated elegance. From 1956 onward, he employed a bracing system with a large crossbar, which he called the "soundbar." This resulted in a highly distinctive, resonant, rich, and full-bodied sound.
